葛传椝先生《英语惯用法词典》

下面四句都作“他住得离邮局很近”解： 

He lives a stone's throw from the post-office. 

He lives within a stone's throw of the post-office. 

He lives not a stone's throw from the post-office. 

He lives within not a stone's throw of the post-office. 

下面几点该注意： 

（1）把 throw 改作 cast 也可以，但不很普通。 

（2）a stone's throw 直译作“一块石头所投得到的距离”解，就是“很短的距离”。 

（3）这语的前面加上了 not 作“不满一块石头所投得到的距离”解，也是“很短的距离”的意思，但不很普通。 

（4）a stone's throw 里的's 偶尔被省去。 

（5）It is not exactly a stone's throw from here 直译作“这个离开这里并不正是一块石头所投得到距离”，实际说“这个离开这里很远”。
