关于since的用法

Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth—but there was an excitement in her voice that men who had cared for her found difficult to forget: a singing compulsion, a whispered ‘Listen,’ a promise that she had done gay, exciting things just a while since and that there were gay, exciting things hovering in the next hour.

请问专家老师们，since在这里作为副词“...之后”讲好像说不通，若是介词那么后边的成分是被省略掉了吗？

你比较一下long since的用法：（副词since被副词long修饰，构成的习语）

《韦氏高阶》long since: at a time in the distant past : long ago

questions that have long since been answered [=questions that were answered long ago]
an animal that has long since disappeared from this region
I long since gave up trying to change her mind.

由此你可推出 just a while since的意义：

just a while since: at a time in the near past: just a while ago

所以，

a promise that she had done gay, exciting things just a while since

= a promise that she had done gay, exciting things a short time before

她不久前刚做了快乐、兴奋的事的迹象。
