我补充一些自己的看法：

一、kind 之后的名词为何省却冠词？

在表示种类、类别的英语表达中，如a kind of car, this kind of car , what kind of car，名词car之前没有冠词。语法书上说：在这类表达中，可数名词在单数情况下通常不加冠词，这似乎有悖于语法规则。究其原因，可数名词car之前不加冠词，是因为这些表示种类的修饰语 (a kind of, this kind of, what kind of)，本身就相当于限定词。就跟其他限定词一样，修饰名词时不能再用冠词是一个道理，例如：我的一个朋友，我们说 my friend，不说my a friend或a my friend。此外，a kind of car中，除了不加冠词，car 也不用复数。因为kind 是单数，作为“一种车；一类车”，这个名词car 看作单数处理。如果是two kinds of，可以用car，也可以用cars。

二、常见的 “种类表达” 一族：

三、kind 之后有无a 的区别：

在一些表示种类的表达中，名词前有时带有冠词，例如：what kind of a car。但是，有无冠词，意思有较大差别。有a 表示该名词的“性质”；无a 纯表示种类。试比较：

What kind of doctor is he? 他是哪一类医生？（内科还是外科）

What kind of a doctor is he? 他医术如何？（医术是否高明）

What kind of job is that? 这是哪一类的工作？

What kind of a job is that? 这算是什么活儿？（意思是，那工作没法干）。
What kind of car did you buy? 你买了什么牌子的车？

What kind of a car did you buy? 你买的车性能如何？

四、kind of 具有副词用法，表示“程度”。

kind of具有副词用法，修饰动词作状语，表示程度。意为“有点儿，有些”。

Jack, you know, I kind of want to keep my VCR for now.

杰克你晓得，我暂时有点想留着我的录像机。

What you did is kind of a stupid thing.

你所做的是一件多少有点愚蠢的事。

He was kind of a fool.

他有点儿傻。

五、a kind of 后面的名词，可否用冠词a 以及使用复数问题：

以下3句，只有第1句合乎语法，后2句不合乎语法。如果现实语言存在的话，那也是不规范的英语。

Most magic is a kind of trick on your eyes.（正）

Most magic is a kind of a trick on your eyes.（不规范）

Most magic is a kind of tricks on your eyes.（不规范）
