never to return 是不定式作结果状语。

不定式作结果状语，除了那些固定的格式外，例如：

1. too...to...

2. enough...to...

3. so...as to...

4. such...as to...

5.表示出人意料的结果，不定式前常加上only。

我举一些特殊的例子：

He lived to see his grandson married.

他活到看到自己的孙子结婚。

It seems that the employee didn't sleep at all to be so sleepy in the early morning.

好像这位雇员（晚上）根本没睡觉，才一大早这么困倦的。

He looked both ways to see that nothing was coming, and then drove across without stopping completely.

他朝着两个方向看了看，结果没有发现什么东西过来，然后开车过去，全然没有停下来的意思。
