首先，Huddleston在《剑桥语法》中提到（P 1420），it 分裂句（即强调句型）中的that分句有时可以被现在分词短语或不定式替代。例如：

Is it Kim making all that noise?

It is you to serve.

以上二个句子的非谓语动词短语等同于含有动词be的that分句：

Is it Kim that is making all that noise?

It is you that is to serve.

现在我们回到网友的这个句子。

as it was part of the six hundred to do and die. 这个as从句本身其实是个it分裂句，只不过that分句被不定式替代了，改为that分句则为：

as it was part of the six hundred that were to do and die.

这个句子去掉it was that, 则得到普通陈述句式：
