The amount of space that an object or a substance fills.

1. amount 之前加了定冠词，说明那是特指的一个名词，the amount 是中心词，of space 作定语，当然是“所属关系”——“空间的量”。事物的大小、多少、长度、体积等，都是事物本身具备的，是“所属关系”。这无需讨论。

2. amount 本身也是一个表示“量概念” 的名词，是可数的，有单复数形式。它可以作为量词用在不可数名词之前作定语。例如：a large amount of space/water/air （大量的空间、水、空气）。这时，a large amount of 作定语，space 等是中心词。a glass of milk 一杯牛奶，就跟a large amount of space，是一样的结构。

以上两种情况，就像：the number of the students 和 a (large) number of students，之间的关系是一样的道理。

3. that an object or a substance fills，定语从句fills 的宾语当然是space，不可能是amount。所以，先行词是space。
