where, from which和from where引导定语从句在不同的情况下所表达的含义是有差别的。

1、在from which中，which直接指代前面表示位置或地点的名词或代词。例如：

The village has only one well from which the villagers can draw water. 这个村子仅有一口井可供村民们取水。

2、 在特定的语境中，不可用from which，而用where又不如用from where。例如：

She climbed up to the top of the hill, from where she could have a good view of the whole town. 她登上山顶，从那里她可以一览全城风光。

▲  句中的from where指的是“从山顶上”，故不用from which，但可以用from on the top of which。虽可以用where，但语义比较含糊和笼统，不如用from where。from where相当于and from on the top of the hill或from on the top of which，语义明晰而具体。比较下例两句，哪句更好？

He hid himself under the bed, from where he could hear what they were talking. 他躲在床下面，他可以从床下听到他们谈话。（from where = and from under the bed或from under which指“从床下”）

He hid himself under the bed, where he could hear what they were talking. 他躲在床下面，在床那儿他可以听到他们谈话。（不如用from where，因为where可指“在床边；在床上；在床下；在床前……”等，具体位置不明确）

应为有from了所以只能用which，当没有from时才可以用where，因为where的意思是含有介词的，举几个例子：

（1）Here is Beijing,where I grow up.
where其实也是指代北京，不过where是在北京的意思，也就是 in Beijing
（2）Here is Beijing,in which I grow up.
其实which就是指代北京，也就是I grow up in which然后把in which提到了前面
（3）Here is Beijing,from which I come.
这句也好懂了吧，就是I come from which，which就是Beijing。

（4）Here is Beijing, where I come.

where其实也是指代北京，不过where是从北京的意思，也就是 from Beijing

which要充当句子成分的，或者修饰一个名词，此处句子不缺成分，which后面也没有安排一个名词，故which不管是作关系代名词还是关系形容词都不能安在此处。where做地方副词，字典中有from where这个说法的，故which不成立而where成立。我这么说不知道对不对 烦请参考

我理解：While listening to a  lecture, I  like sitting in the first row, from  ____ i  can  hear clearly. ——用from which在语法上是说的通的。但是问题中后半部分句子意思应该是（1） I can hear clearly from in the first row.  而不是 （2）I can hear clearly from row.——如果（2）在句意上能说通，那问题中空缺处用from which就也对。但是（2）在英文上应该是说不通的，所以空缺处用from which不合适。

另外想请教一下曹老师，that place这个词组在词性上相当于是一个副词adv么？

因为您提到：

“I like sitting in the first row, and from that place I can hear clearly.这是正确的句子。”……“由于that place = there， 所以，这个句子等于：I like sitting in the first row, from where I can hear clearly.”

我：（that是代词，place是名词n），既然that place = there，那“that place”在词性上相当于是一个副词adv么？ ，那同理可推 that time ，that reason都相当于是一个副词adv么？
