过去完成时与一般过去时通用的问题

老师们好，

请问这句话能不能和下面这句划等号？

Before I went to the police station, I called the client's office.

=When I went to the police station, I had called the client's office.

第一句很好，没有任何问题。

第二句不可以。尽管你想从时态上体现先后，但不符合逻辑：

一个人先后做了两个动作，让when 从句晚，主句早——讲不通。因为：when 的主句，往往指突发的，无法预料的，没有事先安排的。而你的主句则是安排的动作，已经发生。所以不符合逻辑。

When I arrived at the police station, I had called the client's office.（误。把when 改为before 才对，说明主句是事先安排的动作）

When I arrived at the police station, I called the client's office.（正。先到达后打电话）

从句晚，主句早，因为主、从句的两个主语不同，说明主句动作是在你不知情的情况下发生的。例如：

When I arrived at the station, the train had left.（正。火车先离开，我后到达）

最好使用下面句子时态：

Before I went to the police station, I had called the client's office.

参考译文：在我去警察局之前，我已给客户办公室打了电话。

(主句动作had called发生在从句动作went之前，从句用过去完成时态。）

=When I went to the police station, I called the client's office.

参考译文：当我去警察局的时候，我给客户办公室打了电话。

（主句动作called发生在从句went所表示的时间，主句用一般过去时态。）
