介词的多义性存疑（举例live on/by）

老师，介词往往含有多种意思，其应用根据句意和语境吗，还是有些动词短语就是死记硬背？

比如，我在字典上看到 live by ... 以什么为生，除此之外，by还有在附近靠着的意思，哪

i live by the big building 能理解成我住在那个巨大建筑物旁边吗？还是必须把live by理解成以什么为生？

又比如，live on ... 以什么为食，除此之外，on还有别的意思，哪可以说 i live on the street. 我住在那条街上，这样理解可以吗？还是必须把live on ... 理解成以什么为食？

具体情况具体分析，不能死记硬背。比较：

He lives by stealing.他靠偷窃为生。

It has long been a dream of mine to retire and live by the sea.退休后去海边生活是我的夙愿。

In the south most of the population live on rice.在南方，绝大多数人以大米为食。

In this northwestern mountain region, some people live on the top of the 2700 meter of high mountains.在这大西北的山区里，有些人住在2700米高的山顶上。

live on 中on可以是介词，也可以是副词

(1)继续活着(为副词用法）

I know my life has been cut short by this terrible virus but Daniel will live on after me.

我知道这种可怕的病毒会让我的生命提前结束，但丹尼尔会在我死后继续活下去。

(2)以…（为食）；（机器）用（某种动力或燃料运转）（为介词用法）

He lived on a diet of water and tinned fish.

他仅靠喝水、吃鱼罐头过活。

The caterpillars feed on a wide range of trees, shrubs and plants.

毛虫以各类树木、灌木和植物为食。

The system could be used to ensure that cars are converted to run on unleaded petrol.

这一系统可以用来确保汽车得以改用无铅汽油。

live by以…谋生

They live by honest labor.

他们靠正当劳动生活。

He lives by begging.

他以乞讨为生。

The islanders live by fishing.
