一个名词可数与否，就看它能不能加不定冠词，有没有复数形式。

subgrade 这个词指“路基”：the ground beneath a roadway or pavement 

通常是不可数的，但是如果前面有形容词修饰或描述，则可以加不定冠词。这就是所谓的“物质名词具体化、形象化”，但这不意味着它是“可数名词”。例如：

1. Subgrade is the important part of the highway engineering and the base of the pavement. 

路基是公路工程的重要组成部分，是路面的基础。

2. Without a strong and stable subgrade there is no stable pavement. 

没有坚固、稳定的路基就没有稳固的路面。
