判断 but 的并列成分

These epochal figures represented lives hard to imitate,but to be acknowledged as possessing higher authority than mere mortals.

请问这里的but是并列连词吗？后面的to be acknowledged..mortals与谁并列？为什么用 to be acknowledged...不定式结构？

But可以是连词、介词、副词。可以排除介词（除了…）

作为连词，but连接相等的句子成分，唯一可连接的成分就是定语。但作为定语修饰lives，语义上成了生活具有权威，不大符合逻辑。

所以but分析为副词，=only。 Only to do引导结果状语。不定式的逻辑主语为句子的主语，这些人物具有权威。

but to be recognized…= only to be recogised…引导结果状语从句。

这些划时代的人物代表了难以模仿的生活，被认为具有高于普通人的权威。‍
