1. “环境污染”一般用形容词作定语，少用of 属格。即：environmental pollution

2. pollution 是“抽象不可数名词”，所以，environmental pollution 泛指时不需要冠词。

3. 关于pollution of the environment 和the pollution of the environment，两个说法都对，不存在“正式语体或非正式语体”的问题。the environment 只是 pollution 的受事者，不是限定者。所谓“受事”，即存在“动宾关系”：pollute the environment。

4. 区别在于：前者是泛指“环境污染”；后者特指某一次、某地或已知的“环境污染”。

所以，They were talking about (the) pollution of the environment. 都对。

有the 说明“谈论某次污染问题”，无the 说明“泛泛而谈污染问题”。
