He is no taller than Tom.

一般书上会讲, 这句话的意思是，他和汤姆一样都不高。我的疑问是，这句话有没有含义表明他比汤姆更低？

我现在觉得没有。因为我看见了下面这句话， Students can no more obtain knowledge without studying than farmers can no more harvest without ploughing ，

我觉得这里边的than实际上就是引出另一个事物，把两个事物作类比，而并不是比较两个事物的程度。

这样想对不对？

no more…than或not…any more than

1)“和……一样地不……”，意味着两者都否定，但往往着重说明前面的一个分句，其作用相当于“neither…nor”。例如：

Mary is no more diligent than Tom. = Neither Mary nor Tom is diligent.玛丽和汤姆俩人都不勤奋。

2)“不……正如……不……一样”，常用来加重说话者的语气。例如：

We can no more leave the Party than fish can leave water.我们不能离开党，正如鱼儿离不开水一样。

比较：no less…than “（至少）和……一样”

He is no less active than he used to be. “他和以前一样活跃。”

not more… than“不如……；不及于……”，语气常着重于后面的一个分句，常可与“not so/as … as”互换使用。

This story is not more interesting than that one. = This story is not so/as interesting as that one.“这个故事不如那个故事有趣。”

比较：严格说来not less…than 的意思是“至少不比…差”，意味着或许还要强一些，但现在基本和no less than混用。

His English is not less than yours. “他的英语至少不比你的英语差。”

相当于：

(1)He is 1.55 metres tall.

(2)Tom is 1.57 metres tall.

即他和汤姆2个人都矮。

Both he and Tom are short.

A is no more... than B

= A is as +该形容词或副词的反义词 as B.

例如，Tom is no taller than John. = Tom is as short as John.

即汤姆和约翰一样矮。这里并没有暗示汤姆比约翰更矮，只是表示二人都不高。

如果是not+比较级，Tom is not taller than John. 则只否定汤姆比约翰高。那么汤姆可能和约翰一样高或者不如约翰高。但用no+比较级，则将A、B视为同类，二者之间不作比较。
