此句中both为前位限定词，表示church minister的全部二个孩子。

He visited the Institute of Neurology in Havana where they both worked.

此句中both为不定代词，作主语they的同位语。

We have both worked there.

此句中的both仍然是不定代词，作主语we的同位语。both和all作主语的同位语时，位于主语之后，如果谓语含有操作词，则位于操作词之后。即和副词作中位状语的位置相同。据此如果分析此时的both或all为副词也许更合理。但几乎所有语法书都是按同位语分析的。就随大流吧。

为什么不能用 Both of boys have been ill，而可以说 Both of them have been ill.

both/all of 后必须接特指名词。人称代词都是特指意义。

所以，我们可以说both/all of the boys, both/all students, both/all the boys, both/all of them, they both/all, 但不能说both/all of boys.

为什么不能用 Both of boys have been ill，而可以说 Both of them have been ill.

【答】“both 和 both of 都可以放在与限定词（如 the, my, these）连用的名词前面。She's eaten both (of) the chops.”

“在 both 后面常常省略 the 或物主词，这时不用 of 。 She's eaten both chops.(不能说：both of chops)”

“与人称代词连用时，我们用 both of us/you/them 。”
