现在分词作定语，被修饰名词必须是分词动作的发出者（施事者），即逻辑主语。the following years中，following是不及物动词的follow的现在分词。这就是说year和follow是逻辑主谓关系。改为定语从句时，that指代years并在从句中作主语。不及物动词follow作谓语。至于用什么时态，取决于句子的语境，不一定都是一般过去时。如果有人或某本书告诉你 the following years = the years that followed. 那是因为在the following years在原文中表示的已经过去的那几年。例如：His father was killed in the war. His life was really difficult in the following. 此时如用定语从句则为：His life was really difficult in the years that followed. (in the following years = in the years that followed. ) 下面句子时态就不同了：If you are but in prison, your son's life will be difficult in the following years. 此时，in the following years 可以换成 in the years that follow.
