■首先要说明的是，英语的强调有多种方式。比如通过重读来强调，通过使用强调词汇来强调，通过改变句子结构来强调。
Tom bought a car.
如果要强调 bought，可以有多种方式。如：
Tom bought a car. （口语中重读bought）
Tom did buy a car. （添加强调词汇did）
What Tom did is buy a car. （使用强调结构）
如果要强调 Tom，可以有多种方式。如：
Tom bought a car. （口语中重读Tom）
Only Tom did buy a car. （添加强调词汇only）
It was Tom who bought a car. （使用强调结构）
■至于你说的句首强调与句末强调，其实句首和句末是两个本来的强调位置，即任何词放在句首或句末都会受到强调，所以就你的句子来说，如果将时间状语放在句末，势必就会让were married不在句末，所以强调的就是时间状语了：
John and Barbara were married on a sunny afternoon in late November.
■再比如：
Thousands of people went to the stadium to watch the championship game on Thanksgiving Day.
单就这个句子来看，似乎to watch the championship game 这一动作比on Thanksgiving Day这一时间状语更重要，更需要强调，所以如果将两者交换一下位置，将需要强调的动作to watch the championship game放在句末，效果会更好：
Thousands of people went the stadium on Thanksgiving Day to watch the championship game.

介词短语作时间状语，放在句首主要突出强调时间状语，其它的和句末区别不是很大。
In 2008,the Beijing Olympics was held.
=The Beijing Olympics was held in 2008
2008年在北京举行的奥林匹克运动会。
备注：介词短语作地点状语或者作表语提前句首倒装和以上不同。
(1)作地点状语的介词短语提前句首倒装
结构为：介词短语+谓语+主语
On the ground lay some air conditioners.
地上放着一些空调。
At the foot of the hill lies a beautiful lake.
小山脚下有一个美丽的小湖。
At the top of the hill stood the tiny chapel.
那座小教堂矗立在山顶上。
In the fields of poppies lay the dying soldiers.
罂粟地里躺着奄奄一息的士兵们。
别的动词如属被动语态也可以倒装。
In the distance could be seen the purple mountains.
远处可以见到紫色的山。
备注：主语如是代词则不能倒装：
At the top of the hill it stood out against the sky.
它背衬青天矗立在山顶上。
(2)作表语的介词短语提前句首倒装
Behind the farmhouse was a rice field.
农舍后面是一片稻田。
Inside the pyramids are the rooms for the bodies of kings and queens.
金字塔里面是国王和王后们的墓穴。
Among its products are farm machines and mining equipment.
它的产品中有农业机械和采矿设备
