grain 表示泛指意义的“谷物，谷类”时，是不可数的。如：

Grain is in long supply. 粮食供应充足。

Grain is the treasure of treasures. 粮食是最为宝贵的东西。

但若指不同种类的“谷物”，则可数：

China grows most of the grains the world knows. 世界上多数谷类中国都种植。

The best-known grains are wheat, barley, oats, rye and maize. 人们最熟悉的谷物有小麦，大麦，燕麦，黑麦以及玉米。

另外，若表示沙、盐、糖等的颗粒或细粒，则总是可数的。如：

There were a few grains of salt on his plate. 他的碟子上有几粒盐。

There are grains of dust in the air. 空气中有极小的灰尘颗粒。
