英语发展的趋势是虚拟语气逐渐被陈述语气形式代替。that从句中的动词原型式虚拟语气在英国英语常用should do代替。在非正式语体中，英国英语还可以用陈述语气。例如：

I suggest that he come tomorrow. 美式英语

I suggest that he should come tomorrwo. 英式英语

I suggest that he comes tomorrow. 英式英语非正式语体

这种that从句用陈述语气形式，国内英语教学没有涉及。但雅思考试考的是英式英语，在阅读文章中就可能出现这种非正式的英式英语用法。

大多数虚拟语气结构在英国英语中都比较正式，而且不太常用。在 that- 从句中，英国人通常更喜欢用 should + 动词不定式（参见521），或普通的现在时态和过去时态。

It is essential that every child should have the same educational opportunities.（或 ... that every child has ...）每个孩子都应享有同等的受教育机会，这是至关重要的。

It was important that James should contact Arthur as soon as possible.（或 ... that James contacted ...）重要的是詹姆斯应该尽快和阿瑟取得联系。
