上面那句话摘自经济学人，主句谓语用单数has，主语economics 按照牛津字典的解释，应该是用复数谓语。这也是就近原则，由diktat决定了谓语吗？谢谢！

网友的理解是正确的。破折号后是另一个句子，解释前一句话的原因。

第二句话的主语economics意为“经济因素”，为复数概念。按照语法一致的原则，谓语动词应该用复数。但本句用单数，显然是受了diktat的影响。这就是非正式语体的主谓一致的就近原则。正式语体则应该遵循语法一致原则，谓语用复数。

作主语，谓语用单数

Economics was a closed book to him.
