有些动词（如 want, allow) 不能与 that 从句连用。

We don’t expect you to stay. 我们没有指望你留下来。
(不能说：We don’t expect that you stay.)
但是，我在各种语法书上可以随便查到 expect 后面接 that 从句的用法。如：
I didn’t expect that I would be invited. 我没料到会被邀请。
I didn’t expect that she would come, would she? 我想她不会来，她会吗？

网友以及解答老师都误解了《牛津英语用法指南》这句话的意思，也没有注意到expect后的that从句用的是动词原型式虚拟语气。
expect有好几个词义，其中之一为demand. 例如：
《牛津词典》：
[transitive] to demand that somebody will do something because it is their duty or responsibility
expect something (from somebody)
Her parents expected high standards from her.
He's still getting over his illness, so don't expect too much from him.
expect something (of somebody)
Are you clear what is expected of you?
expect somebody to do something
They expected all their children to be high achievers.
We are expected to work on Saturdays.
expect to do something
I expect to be paid promptly for the work.
因此，该书说的并没有错。当expect表示要求这个意义时，是不可以后接that从句的。但可以接复合宾语，不定式作宾补。
例如：They expect us to work on Saturdays. 他们要求我们每个周六都上班。
They expect that we work on Saturdays. 错误。
表示“要求”这个意义的expect是不能后接that从句的。如用that从句，从句用陈述语气，就不是原意了。

其一：有些动词（如 want, allow) 不能与 that 从句连用。——看了这句话，我的感觉是，英语中大部分动词都可以跟that从句。我觉得，应该这样描述：并不是所有的动词都可以跟that从句，或者说，只有少数动词可以跟that从句作宾语。
其二：不能说：We don’t expect that you stay. ——这个例句除了宾语时态不恰当，应该使用将来时：We don’t expect that you will stay. 之外，expect 接that从句完全正确，而不仅仅是expect sb. to do sth. 句型。《牛津英语用法指南》这样对比讲解的结果，很严重，很误导。尤其对国外英语学习者而言，这是很大的失误！

expect 后面完全可以接 that 从句。例如：
We expect (that) the economy will improve. = We expect the economy to improve.我们预计经济将会改善。（摘自《韦氏高阶英汉双解词典》）
