in under与from under 有相似的地方，也有不相似的地方。相似的地方是：它们均属于“介词+介词（短语）”结构，不相似的地方是：你举的例子 from under the tree, from under the bed, from under the table 中的 under 均表示“在……下面”，但 in under four minutes 中的 under 表示“少于”，与 less than 同义，指少于某一数目、距离或时间等，所以in under four minutes 的意思就是“在四分钟以内”，如果去掉介词 in 句子意思就不会那么清楚。

其实 under 表示“少于”时，不仅可以用于 in 后面，根据语义的需要，也可用于其他介词的后面。如：

Water will boil at 100℃. It won’t boil at under 100℃. 水到摄氏100就会沸腾。水低于摄氏100就不会沸腾。
