英语句式理解和翻译(almost what Beijing is to China)

It’s the biggest city in Japan. It’s quite a dense city, almost what Beijing is to China.

关于A is to B what C is to D. 我同意刘老师的翻译。但关于这个句子的结构，我有不同的看法。

我认为what从句不是状语从句，what也不是连词。

我对这个句子的分析为：

A 主语

is 系词

to B 状语

what C is to D 表语从句。其中what不仅引导从句，并在从句中作表语，C为主语，is为系词，to D为从句的状语。

what为融合型关系代词，= that which。即融合型关系代词what引导的从句等于带有限制性定语从句的名词词组。

本句中的to B和to D分别是主句和从句的状语，而不是表语。因为主系表结构表示一个完整的逻辑意义，而A is to B和C is to D都不能表示完整逻辑意义。例如：

Air is to man what water is to fish中，to man对Air并没有表述作用，对air其表述作用的是what从句。“对于人”为状语。What water is to fish is the same thing as air is to man.

句子的前面部分应该没有问题，主要问题可能在句子的后面部分。

句中的 what 在此用作连词，其意为“好比”“犹如”“就像”，用以引导相似状语从句。如：

Air is to us what water is to fish. 我们离不开空气，就像鱼儿离不开水一样。

Reading is to the mind what food is to the body. 读书与思想的关系就好比食物与健康的关系。
