when 和 while的主要区别在于：

1. when 可以引导到“特殊疑问句”和“名词性从句”（主语从句、宾语从句、表语从句、同位语从句）；while 不可以，它没有这个功能。例如，网友的问题，就是一个“特殊疑问句”。只能用when 提问，不能用while。例如：

When did you begin to study French? （正）

I began to study French when I was seven.

决不能说：

While did you begin to study French? （误）

I began to study French when I was seven.

关于“名词性从句”，只能用when 引导，不能用while。因为“名词性从句”原本就是一个“特殊疑问句”。例如下面的宾语从句：

I don't know when they will start off. （正）

I don't know while they will start off. （误）

2. when 和 while 都是“从属连词”，都可以引导“时间状语从句”。

when 可以表示“时间点”（跟终止性动词连用）， 也可以表示“时间段”（跟延续性动词连用）。而while 只能表示“时间段”（跟延续性动词连用），此时，while 跟when 可以互换使用。举例如下：

The train had left when I arrived at the station. （正）

The train had left while I arrived at the station. （误）

He found a wallet when he was walking in the street. （正）

He found a wallet while he was walking in the street. （正）
