instead of是由副词和介词构成的短语介词，后接名词性结构作宾语。严格讲，其后的宾语是介词of的宾语，of介词短语修饰副词instead。其实这是一个副词短语。而介词of通常是不能后接介词短语作宾语的。词典例句中并没有instead of后接名词性结构以外的例句。但在实际语言应用中，因为instead of意为“而不是”，大致等于rather than, but not. 在有些人的心目中就将instead of当作rather than或but not用了，即将instead of用作准并列连词。即instead of前后用相同的语法结构。因此，严格讲，并不是instead of后接介词短语，为介词短语作介词的宾语，而是instead of被用作并列连词。这种用法均为非正式英语，甚至不是规范的英语。最好避免使用。尤其是英语考试中要避免。
