英语国家的人如今通常分别用Dad和Mum来称呼父母。小孩子则分别用Daddy，Mummy。在过去，人们用Father或Papa称呼父亲，用Mother或Mama称呼母亲。

由此可知当把父亲或母亲称呼为Fatherr或Mother时，相当于我们称爸妈为“父亲或母亲”，是比较老式的称呼，因而也比较庄重。Dad和Mum则相当于日常生活中我们叫“爸、妈”。小孩子用Daddy、Mummy相当于中国小孩叫“爸爸、妈妈”，港台地区常音译为“爹地、妈咪”。港台电影或电视剧中常会听到成年女子还叫父母为“爹地、妈咪”，嗲声嗲气，听起来很别扭的。
