有人认为 It is time 后面的从句不能用 were 而要用 was（主语为单数时），是这样吗？

比如：It is time he _______ told the news. (was / were)

【答】(1) It is time 后面的从句（定语从句）常用虚拟过去式。在当代英语中，尤其在口语中，单数主语常用was代替虚拟式were。例如：He looks as if he was ill.他像是病了。（摘自《薄冰英语语法》修订版p.371）

(2) 英国1985年出版的《英语语法大全》（A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language）认为It is time后面的结构中，例如 It's time I was in bed 中的 was 不能用 were 替换。（详见英文版p.1013）

(3)《朗文英语语法》（外研版，p.425）的例句：It's (high) time he was (were) taught a lesson. 现在是该教训教训他的时候了。

【建议】在 It is time 后面的从句中，主语是单数时最好不用 were ，而要用 was。
