H. G. Wells was born in 1866. His energy must have been enormous, for he wrote an astonishing number of books. Many of the later ones were concerned with his idea that mankind would have to create a world state, if it was not to end up by destroying itself.

请问老师：

(1) 第二句红色字 would have to 与 was 表示与过去事实相反（如果是这一用法，通常我们这里用 were，为何是 was？），还是过去时态的真实条件句？

(2) if 在此翻译为“只要”还是“如果”？如果表示“如果”，那原 if 条件句应该去掉 not

变为 if it was not to end up by destroying itself 才符合逻辑啊，是吗？所以原句 if 表示“只要”？

这个句子中的条件句是陈述语气，不是虚拟语气。作者后期的著作中有很多涉及他自己的观点，即如果人类最终的结局不是自己毁掉自己的话，人类就应该创建一个世界大同的国家。（即全世界只有一个国家，这样就可避免掠夺资源、恶性竞争、战争等。）作者认为他的想法是可以实现的，因此用陈述语气。这是作者过去的想法，站在过去的立场看将来，所以主句用过去将来时，从句用be to do这样的将来时间表示法（否定结构）。be to do表示将来，是某个时间所做的安排、打算、命令，或注定会发生的事。本句是注定的意思。例如：

All men are to die. 人注定都会死的。

No men are to live forever. 没人能永生。

因此，if从句中的not不可省去。if就是“如果”的意思。
