more和fewer无论作为限定词还是不定代词的比较级，修饰或替代复数名词，其本身都可以被数词或many修饰。

more的这种用法很常见，例如：我们常说，I need one more/five more/many more helpers. few也完全可以如此使用。例如，我们可以说，Xi‘an University has many fewer students than Peking University.

我查了BNC和COVA语料库，分别查到23条和123条many fewer的例句。其中fewer可以是限定词，也可以是不定代词。

由语言的实际应用可知，many fewer的使用是没有问题的。

我们知道，英语有的形容词是成对的，例如，old/young, new/old, tall/short, good/bad, long/short, big/small等。表示程度高的形容词的用法要比表示程度低的形容词的范围更广。

例如，当我们问一个人的年龄的时候，我们说“How old is he?", 此时，old并不表示年老，而只是问年龄。因此，这个问句可以用来问一个婴儿、少年、青年、中年和老年人的年龄。但当我们问”How young is he?", 我们则先入为主的假定了he很年轻，只是想知道究竟有多么年轻。因此，不能问一个老年人How young is he? 但可以问一个婴儿How old is he?

同理，当我们使用as...as结构作同级比较时，使用程度高的形容词，则没有绝对意义，只表示二者在某一个性质或特征上具有相同的程度。例如：Tom is as tall as John. 对于二人的实际身高，这句话没有任何暗示，二人可能都是矮子，都是中等身材或都是高个子。但当我们说Tom is as short as John的时候，前提是二人都是矮个子，然后表示二人的身高相同。

many/few的同级比较也是这种情况。I have as many books as he does. 这里并没有任何暗示，我和他的书都很多，而只是说我们二人的书一样多。实际的书的数量可能只有三本，也可能是几百本。但如果说I have as few books as he does. 则显然我们二人的书的实际数量都很少，只不过我们二人在这方面相同而已。

但是，比较级却不受此限制。He is taller than I。I am shorter than he.这二个句子的意思是相同的，并没有暗示他和我的实际高度。通理，I have more books than he does. 和He has fewer books than I do. 二句也是同义的。并不暗示我们实际有多少书。假设我有100本书，他有二本书，我的书比他的书多了98本，就可以说I have 98 more books than he does. He has 98 fewer books than I do. 98是很大的一个数量了。因此可以说，I have many more books than he does. He has many fewer books than I do.

这种用法有什么错呢？凡是认为不可以说many fewer的，一定是对fewer表示比较级的时候的理解发生了偏差，以为fewer只能表示绝对的少，二人都已经很少了，其中的差别就不可能很大。可是这种理解是错误的。

因此，many fewer的使用是没有任何问题的。我已经给出了充足的理由。我相信认为不可以用的人讲不出不可用的理由来。因此，不要迷信某本书，要用自己的脑子去思考。
