副词，正式用语。

用于一个句子、分句或词组之前，表示某事是前面所说的事实的结果。例如：

Crime is on the increase; hence the need for more police. 后接分句

犯罪率在上升，因此需要更多的警察。

His grandfather was Greek; hence the surname.后接名词词组

他祖父是希腊人，因此有了这个姓。

Alcohol can cause liver failure and hence death.后接名次词组

由于hence是个副词，因此其前通常有分号或and。如果hence用于句首，则为连接性状语，在语义上与前一句构成因果关系。
