理解一个句子或句子中某个词的具体含义，有时候必须结合上下文。 下面我结合网友的三个问题，结合原文的上下文，解答如下：

1 关于介词for的用法。

这个句子的结构为It is for sb to do sth. 要回答for起什么作用，必须清楚It指的是什么。It是形式主语，还是人称代词？还是强调句型的IT？首先可以排除强调句型，因为后面没有相应的that结构。形式主语it也可以排除，因为如果it是形式主语，那么不定式to be dedicated...就是真正主语，for us, the living就只能做表语。这个句子就不符合逻辑了。因此It只能是人称代词，is为表语，for us the living to be dedicated...是不定式复合结构做表语。这样的话，for的作用就是引出不定式的逻辑主语，不必分析for是“为了”还是“对于。。。来讲”。

那么it作为人称代词指代什么呢？我们只能从前文找线索。我们知道不定式做表语是名词性的表语，与主语是A=B的关系，那么it指代的事物就应该等同于表语不定式。现在我们看原文蓝色部分的句子。我将蓝色字体部分大意整理如下：

2 rather作为副词，可以修饰形容词或副词，表示程度。也可以修饰动词，表示和前句的否定句形成对比，强调本句动词的肯定性，可以翻译成“相反、而”。例如：

Our aim was not to punish the rich, but rather to bring justice to the poor.

（我们的目的不是要惩罚富人，而是要将公正带给穷人。）

因此本句中rather修饰不定式复合结构，强调不定式表示的这件事正是我们能够以及应该做的事情，与前句的我们不可能使这片土地更加神圣化形成对比。rather翻译成“而”：

而我们所能够做也应该做的是：我们活着的人要献身于。。。

3 关于四个波折号，不同的版本标点符号不同，我看到三个不同的版本有三种不同的标点符号。四个波折号显然是欠妥的。我认为我目前引用的这个版本的标点符号是正确的。

根据《剑桥英语语法》（生成语法）波折号的作用是引出同位语。同位语可以用三种标点符号，即冒号、波折号和逗号。下面我解释下面这个版本的标点符号和that从句。
