believe作及物动词有二个意思：
1 [TRANSITIVE] to think that a fact is true

I don’t believe that she’s ever been to Hong Kong.

2 [TRANSITIVE] to have an opinion about what is true or what might happen, although there is no proof

The police didn’t believe her story.

作不及物动词有一个意思：

[INTRANSITIVE] to have a religious belief

而believe in作为短语动词（介词动词）意义不同，也有三个意思：

1 believe in someone/something to think that someone or somethingexists

I don’t believe in miracles.

2 believe in something to think that an idea or a way of doing something is good or right

She used to say she didn’t believe in marriage.

3 believe in someone to feel confident that a person or organization is good or reliable

Some of his previous supporters have stopped believing in him.

believe 和believe in，貌似而义近，但它们是有区别的。告诉你最简单的记忆和区别办法：

I believe you. 我相信你说的话。

（该句的含义是：你刚才告诉我了某件事情，我认为你说的是真话、是实话，所以，我就说了这个句子。）

I believe in you. 我信任你。

（该句的含义是：我认为对方是诚实的、可信赖的、正直的，值得托付的。不单单是相信对方一句话的问题，而是整个人品值得信赖。）

再举个例子，如果翻译“那位老太太信教”，这时就要用believe in，不用believe。

The old lady believes in religions.

所谓“信教”，就是“信仰宗教”，对教会的宗旨深信不疑，是可以信赖和值得托付的一种信仰。
