经常听说“双重否定”表达一种强势的肯定,可是《英语语法大全》认为双重否定是一种说话留有余地的表达法?并且可以用减弱语来改写双重否定的句子(例句我已给出)。请问老师,两种说法是不是南辕北辙?

你举的例子中not是局部否定,只否定形容词unintelligent. 可以说是保守的说法即留有余地。但下面的句子则不同:
They didn't make any unintelligent observations. 这则是强势肯定。等于:
All observations they made were intelligent.
双重否定表示强势肯定,通常指谓语是否定的,句中还有带否定词缀的词项。例如:
Nothing is impossible. = Everything is possible. 前者的肯定意味更强烈。
《语法大全》只涉及一个很小的部分,不是一般意义上的双重否定句。
