so that 原本引导目的状语从句，现在可以用来引导表语从句，但主语多为表示“目的”的词语，例如：aim, purpose, idea, reason 等。但是，这种用法比较少见。又如：

The reason why I add salt to the water is so that it can taste better. 我在水中加入盐的动机是为了让味道好一些。

同样是表语从句：The reason why I add salt to the water is that the taste is too weak. 我在水中加入盐的原因是味道太淡了。（本句没有so，只有that）

当然，主语也可以由代词充当，指代前面讲的某件事情。例如：
