While you are on the phone, the baby pulls the table-cloth off the table smashing half your best crockery and cutting himself in the process.

You hang up hurriedly and attend to baby, crockery, etc.

Meanwhile, the meal gets burnt.

  1. 第一句中是the bady, 特指,第三句中为什么加 the?

  2. 什么情况下不加 the, 被这句弄糊涂了!

“attend to baby, crockery”中的babycrockery前均应加限定词。文:

...Let us suppose that you are preparing a meal and keeping an eye on the baby at the same time. The telephone rings and this means your troubles are beginning. While you are on the phone, the baby pulls the table-cloth off the table, destroying your prepared meal. You hang up hurriedly and attend to your baby. Meanwhile, the meal gets burnt....

最后一句中的the meal指前文的a meal,为特指。
