英语故事中经常出现的you could怎么理解

It was the quietest wood you could possibly imagine

There were no birds, no insects, no animals, and no wind. You could almost feel the trees growing.

They were no bigger than ordinary rings, and you couldn't help noticing them because they were so bright.

But it was a nicer sound than that, a more musical tone: only so faint that you could hardly hear it.

它们是虚拟吗?是对什么时态的虚拟?如果是现在时故事又发生在过去,难道是真实条件句吗?

学好虚拟语气的前提是先学好时态。你说讲故事的时候,故事的内容都是发生在过去的事,是不是该用一般过去时态。当需要用情态动词的时候也该用情态动词的过去形式。can是不能用于过去时态的。你说是不是虚拟语气。

赞同曹老师的分析。前后、上下文都是过去时态,could 用在此语境,怎么会是虚拟语气呢?

could 在上述句子中,或者表示过去的能力,过去的许可,或者过去的可能性。跟虚拟语气不沾边。

我举个例子:

She couldn't answer me when I asked her a question yesterday.

couldn't 是虚拟语气吗?
