avoid后面不能接复合宾语，但可以接动名词复合结构。如：
They built a wall to avoid soil being washed away.（《牛津高级词典》）。
由此可以造出下面这个句子：
The company needs to avoid this/its happening in the future. (this是动名词逻辑主语）
作者可能疏忽了，误将this看作宾语，造了一个what从句，将this隐含到what里了。结果成了一个病句。
其实这个句子去掉happenning就可以了。意思不变，结构正确。
