请问在这里用过去完成时合适吗

今天写了篇作文,要求如下

假设你是李华,上个月去英国参加了一次夏令营活动,活动期间一直住在Mr. Smith家中。他们给你提供了很多帮助,请写一封感谢信表达对他们的感谢

有一段我是这样写的

When I left China for the summer camp in UK,I began to worry about the difficulties I would have to face,but my worries all went away as you came to me,promising to make me feel at home as you can,and that was actually what you had done: you'd taught me the customs of UK so I wouldn't be embarrassed,you'd ……(后面是一串的过去完成时)

请问这里的时态用的对吗?另外,UK前有加定冠词the,也有不加的,它们之间有什么区别?

过去完成时用得不好。关键是你受了that was actually what you had done.这句的影响。如果这句改成And you actually did so. 然后你以后全用一般过去时。听话人会按照你的叙述顺序来构成一幅画面。当你用了that was what you had done,你的时间跳跃到了你结束英国之旅,再回头叙述之前的事情,你就用了过去完成时。这种思维的跳跃是没必要的。关键会给人感觉过去完成时态的动作似乎在一般过去时之前。因此这封信的时态使用不够好。that was really是罪魁祸首。改掉这部分,时态使用就舒服自然多了。
