顾名思义，“光杆名词”就是说这个名词之前没有任何限定修饰语（如没有：a, the, this, that, his, each等修饰），就像“光杆司令”那样，单独用在句子中。英文是：bare noun。

语法书在论述冠词时，可数名词单数在句中本应加冠词，但使用时却是“零冠词”，而且不带任何其他限定词。例如：

We elected him monitor. 我们选他当班长。

a. [*(The) captain of the team] will visit us tomorrow. (the obligatory in argument position)

意为：唯一职务的名词作主语时，要加冠词the，不可省略。

b. We elected him [captain of the team]. (the not required in predicate position)

意为：唯一职务的名词作宾补时，冠词the不需要。
