whichever引导的是名词性从句，作介词in的宾语。whichever + 名词 = any + 名词+that. in whichever directions I looked = in any directions that I looked.

    一般语法书都提到what作为特殊关系代词引导名词性从句时，等于the thing which或that which, 即一个特指的名词或指示代词加关系代词which。如：What you have said is not true. 等于The thing which you have said is not true.

    其实whatever, whichever, whoever, whomever都可以作为特殊不定代词引导名词性从句。不同于what的是：what隐含的名词或代词是特指的，而这几个wh-ever词隐含的名词或代词是泛指的。

    whatever = anything that

    whichever = any + 名词 + that

    whoever = anyone who

    whomever = anyone whom

    例如：

    Whatever requests you make will be granted.

    = Any requests that you make will be granted.

    We'll eat at whichever restaurant has a free table.

    = We'll eat at any restaurant that has a free table.

    Whoever told you this was lying.

    = Anyone who told you this was lying.

    You can dance with whomever you like at the dancing party.

    = You can dance with anyone whom you like at the dancing party.
