1. much 除指代不可数名词外，也可指代可数名词的一部分，其中“much of + 限定词（如a, the, this, that, my, his…）+ 单数可数名词”就是最常用的结构之一。如：
Much of the building has been destroyed in the earthquake. 地震中这栋建筑物大部分被毁了。
Much of the book is about the history of the village. 这本书的大部分篇幅是讲述这个村子的历史。
2.“Much of ...”表示“...... 很多地方”， of 后面能够接可数名词，例如：
You can't see much of a country in a week . 一周之内在一个国家游览不了多少地方。（《牛津英语用法指南》第三版第357节）
所以 Much of the city lies 3 meters below the sea level. 是正确的。

我现在觉得：如果名词为复数，则用 many，如果名词为单数，则用 much。

此指一个国家的很多地方。如果改为：You can't see many of the countries in a week.(我按：此句是我编的，不一定正确)此指众多国家中的的很多国家。请刘老师指正。
