stay the night如何分析句子成分

看到这样一个句子：

Why not stay the night at our place?

请问，如何分析stay the night? 这个 stay 是及物动词吗？它后面的 the night是宾语？还是有其他的分析？

stay the night 是stay for the night的省略，现在演变成了固定说法。

语言在向着简洁方向发展，这与日新月异的信息时代有关，与人们的快节奏生活相连。尤其体现在美国英语中，省略介词的现象比比皆是，前提是：只要不引起歧义。例如：

I will go home Sunday.

They stayed here five days.

语法研究也要随行就市。我认为，stay仍然要保持原来的不及物动词，只是把原来的介词短语for the night做状语，改为现在的名词the night做状语。

这样分析，既不破坏原有的语法规则，又能跟随语言发展的潮流。

我担心的是，有人为了削足适履，而把stay 看作及物动词，把the night看作宾语。这样的话，仅仅为了这一个词组，就把stay变成了及物动词，会得不偿失。根本问题是，stay 跟the night无法构成“动宾关系”。

(2)固定搭配用法:stay the night=stay （for) the night

（该固定搭配是省略中间介词“for”stay (for) the night,因为为stay为不及物动词，后面不能直接接宾语。)

stay the night 住一晚;过夜(用英语解释为" If you stay the night in a place, you sleep there for one night.)

They had invited me to come to supper and stay the night.

他们邀请我去吃晚饭并住上一晚。
