6 space也是一种时间(time)吗

I now regularly pull out my phone to check a fact, watch a video, read weibo. Such activities fill the spaces that used to be dead time (such as waiting for somebody to arrive for a lunch meeting).

这是2016年高考题（江苏考卷）中的一个句子。其中的the spaces that used to be dead time是不是有点怪？the spaces 怎么可能曾经是“死时间”呢？难不成 space 也是一种 time 了？

你的句中的 space 在此不是表示空间，而是表示时间，根据上下文可理解为“碎片时间”。英语中有个常用短语就是 a short space of time (=a short period of time 短短的一段时间)。如：

They achieved a lot in a short space of time. 他们在短短的时间里取得了很大的成就。

你的句子大意为：

I now regularly pull out my phone to check a fact, watch a video, read weibo. Such activities fill the spaces that used to be dead time (such as waiting for somebody to arrive for a lunch meeting). 我现在经常会拿出手机来核对事实，观看视频，阅读微博。那些过去曾经是无聊的碎片时间（比如聚餐时等人吃午饭）现在可以用来做上面的事情。
