▲有一次参加一个英语教学研讨会，主题是“书面表达”（亦称英语写作）。主持人安排了一位老师代表发言，并展示了学生的“英语习作”，文中有错的话就提出修改意见。习作的内容是，描写中学生在寒假期间的一些活动。开头一句话就是“冬天到了”，意思是说：时间是冬季。学生写的句子是It was in winter. 有老师指出，“时间是冬季，应该为It was winter. 之前不能加介词in”；但也有老师认为，学生的原句不错；也有的老师认为两者都对！最后争论得不可开交。

这两句话貌似一样，但实际上差别很大。It was winter. 应译为“时间是冬季（直译：冬天到了）”，这里it指代“时间”，是一个“主系表结构”。但是，It was in winter. 意思是“事情发生在冬季”，it指的是“事件”，而不是“时间”，was也不表达“是”的含义，而是“发生”，相当于happened或took place。　　

▲一字之差，两个句子为何有如此大的差别呢？我们知道，代词it既可以表示时间，也可以指代已提及的事物。winter之前没有介词，说明时间就是冬季。in winter是介词短语，意为“在冬季”，那么，主语It肯定不表示时间，而是别的意思。Be除了是系动词外，还有一个特别的用法，就是“发生”的意思。又如：The game will be next Friday.（比赛将在下周五举行。）be的这种特殊用法，其主语往往是表示“事件”的名词，如：　meeting, talk, lecture, report, discussion, exam, interview, match, game, party, concert, play, accident, eruption, event 等。
