Who is your English teacher?
He asked what was the matter.
He asked what the matter was.
Hearing the sound, his wife rushed in and asked what the matter was.

what was the matter相当于 what was wrong, wrong是形容词,matter是名词,在表示“问题;毛病”时,“定冠词+ matter”被当作形容词使用了。如:
Is anything the matter?
There's nothing the matter with it.
Every time he peeps, she jumps to see what the matter is.
I don't know what is the matter.
I don't know what the matter is. a) 我不知道出了什么问题。
