The team captain vainly tried to rally his troops. 队长试图振作部队的士气，但没有成功。
若将vainly移至句首，应该是下面的A句还是B句：
Vainly the team captain tried to rally his troops.
Vainly did the team captain try to rally his troops.

vainly置于句首时，后面的句子可以倒装也可以不倒装。如下面两句摘自《张道真现代英语用法词典》的vainly词条：

Vainly he tried to find someone to marry him. (Chambers)

Vainly did he try (he tried) to open the door. (DCE)

所以你的以下两个句子都对的：

Vainly the team captain tried to rally his troops.

Vainly did the team captain try to rally his troops.
