1. 有关短语与搭配

in the north 意思是：在北方。如：

I live in the north. 我住在北方。

It rains a lot, especially in the north. 尤其是在北方，雨下得很多。

The company has set up its new base in the north. 这家公司在北部设立了新的基地。

以下表达中所用介词不同，所表示的含义也有所不同：

in the north of 在…的北部(指包括在该地之内)

on the north of 在…北面(指在该地之旁或靠近该地)

to the north of 在…之北(指不包括在该地之内)

2. northern 前面是否用冠词的问题

northern 是形容词，它前面是否用冠词原则上与它后面所修饰的名词有关。

(1) 其前用冠词，是因为其后修饰的名词需要冠词修饰：

The team joined the Northern League last year. 这支队参加了去年的北部联赛。

The animal is found in the northern regions of Sweden. 这种动物可以在瑞典北部地区找到。

A narrow ledge run across the northern face of the cliff. 悬崖北边有一条窄窄的崖壁。

Enemy forces have consolidated their hold on the northern province. 敌军已经巩固了他们对那个省份北部的控制。

(2) 其前不用冠词，是因为其后修饰的名词不需要冠词修饰：

Have you ever been to Northern Ireland? 你曾经去过北爱尔兰吗?

The allies lost their hold on northern France. 盟国丧失了对法国北部的控制。

The ozone layer is disappearing over northern Europe. 北欧上空的臭氧层正在消失。

They are going to visit Tsingtao, a summer resort in northern China. 他们准备访问中国北方的避暑胜地青岛。

(3) 有时其前不用冠词，而是用物主代词或所有格，其实这个物主代词或所有格也是修饰其后名词的：

He lost his northern accent after moving south. 他搬到南方后说话就不再带北方口音了。

England’s northern neighbour now has its own parliament. 英格兰的北邻现在有了自己的议会。
