看了各位老师和网友的分析，很受启发。但我觉得，就本题而言，答案只能是 that，不宜用 why。
▲for the reason that 或 for the simple reason that 可视为固定搭配（总是用 that，不用 why），其实它就相当于连词 because（表示原因），可以理解为一个原因状语从句。又如：
We didn’t go swimming for the simple reason that the water was too cold. 我们没去游泳，只是因为水太冷。（本句中的for the simple reason that 可以换成because）
We aren't going for the simple reason that we can't afford it. 我们不去，只是因为我们负担不起。（本句中的for the simple reason that 可以换成because）
She didn’t answer for the simple reason that she couldn’t think of anything to say. 她没有回答，只是因为她没有想出要说什么。（本句中的for the simple reason that 可以换成because）
▲对于 the reason 后可用that也可用why引导从句的情形，the reason why (that)不能相当于because。如：
Give me one good reason why (or that) I should help you. 给我一个合理的必须帮你的理由。（本句中的reason why / that 不能改为 because）
There must be some reason why (or that) he looked pleased. 他看上去那样开心肯定有某种理由。（本句中的reason why / that 不能改为 because）
We’d like to know the reason why (or that) she didn’t accept the job. 我们想知道她不接受这份工作的原因。（本句中的reason why / that 不能改为 because）
