a number of...意为“大量……”，number 前可以增加修饰词 small 或者 large 等。特点说一下 a great many，它的含义也是“大量……”，和 a number of 一样，后面都接可数名词，但是，a great many 后面直接接名词，不加 of，有没有加 of 的情况呢？答案是肯定的，但这个时候意义发生了改变。记得我以前给其他的朋友也回答过类似的问题，我还是用循序渐进的方式讲解一下。

注意一下以上的这些例子，of 后面的名词前有定冠词，说明这是特指的范围。意为“这些或那些男孩中的一个（三个，一些，几个，许多等），这种关系是整体与部分的关系。这种情况下 a great many 后面就可以加 of 了。
