advertise 可用及物动词和不及物动词，但两者含义不同：

1. 用作及物动词，后接宾语：advertise sth指为某物做广告，即“宣传某物”或“登广告宣传某物”。如：

There are plans to advertise the job more widely. 计划更加广泛地宣传这项工作。

I advertised my house in the “Daily News”. 我在《每日新闻》上为我的房子登了广告。

2. 用作不及物动词，其后不接宾语；若接介词for，表示“登广告征求或寻找某物”（其中的 for表示登广告的目的）。如：

I shall advertise for someone to go with me. 我将登广告寻人和我同去。

We advertised for staff in a local newspaper. 我们在一家地方报纸上刊登了招聘广告。

We’ve advertised for someone to look after the garden. 我们登广告招聘一个看管花园的人。

The manager asked to be allowed to advertise for more staff. 经理要求允许他聘更多的人员。

3. 注意，不要受汉语的影响而译错，如：

你要想卖掉你的产品, 你就得为此登广告。

正：If you want to sell your product you must advertise it.

误：If you want to sell your product you must advertise for it.
