划分句子结构
先看这句，He is prepared，是主系表。前面加上情态，助动词ought to，后面加上形容词prepared的补足语 for the worse，就得到原句。Prepared for the worse是一个整体。关于形容词补足语的概念，可在本论坛搜索。夸克语法体系是这样分析的。

Themselves在这个句子里面做的是主语的同位语。第1个助动词之后，是同位语的正常位置。比如all作同位语，They were all defeated。再比如第一助动词是情态动词的，Sentences have parts, which may themselves have parts 句子由不同部分组成，而这些部分本身又可能由（更小的）部分组成。（CGEL）

时间状语从句的省略
不能。She had to watch that train (disappear towards her destination while she was left behind).这个状语从句是从属于不定式的。 Disappear的主语是the train，所以不符合你说的那个原则。不过这个问题倒是挺有意思的。

such a despair as made...传统语法叫做定语从句，现代语法叫做比较分句。术语并不是关键点，能看出来这一些词实际上是一起组成NP，只不过是被分隔了就行。
